premise
Life is never as it seems. There are things lurking in the shadows, waiting for the opportune moment to strike, just like snakes in the grass. The things that go bump in the night are real and they've been walking with us since the beginning of man. Watching, plotting and feeding off our very kind. The sun seems to go down sooner these days and the night has become nightmarish for any soul brave enough to set foot outside their door. In this world the government is cruel and evil, hiding the fact of supernatural beings and instead using some of them for their bidding. Los Angeles has become a gothic paradise full of ominous graveyards as the dead stock pile and a growing amount of churches. But they seem useless in a God-Forsaken city of LA. To the oblivious and unaware the Southern California epicenter of pop culture and Hollywood plastic is still LA, but to the supernaturally-inclined, there is another name: Malum Urbis, "city of evil" in Latin. In the beginning God created the heavens and earth, and the creatures, and man. However, the creation story fails to mention the birth of other beings, things that man has dared not mention throughout the course of history. In the beginning there were the animals and man, but also demons. The violent Biblical history of man is nothing compared to the blood-bathed history of the Old Ones, where man were the enslaved playthings. Eventually, however, the number of men rose and overpowered the Old Ones, who were lessening in population. These are the facts that have never been passed down from generation to generation, preferring to bury and forget it. However, some things can never be forgotten, and have reemerged as fables and folk tales. These stories are told as either entertainment stories or warnings of dire consequences if children did not follow the straight path. Only the small margin of human beings grew to learn, either from hushed whispers from parents or by finding it out by actual experience, that these horror stories are not just for grotesque morals or fun, but actual. But they are people with special abilities and supernatural beings who attempt to beat back the dark, to fight the growing, increasing wave of evil that is inhabiting Malum Urbis. These people were born with special gifts that can be used to their advantage in fighting evil. The supernatural beings who help them some consider to be angels are actually faeries. Together they ban together to fight back the rising demon population in the city. These are the things that "bump" back. Are you ready to join the battle of good against evil? NOTE: This game is set in modern day Los Angeles. Reality is warped here; think Watchmen-style settings. The demonology is based off of Buffy and other sources, and we will be dealing with very dark, mature themes. |
